FAQ

What is a "pitch?"

Your "pitch" or idea for a feature in the magazine should include any written and visual material you would like us to consider. Please package all of your materials into a single PDF. You do not need to worry about layout and design. As little as one image or short poem may be included in a pitch. Stories, articles, and essays should be completed for full consideration. Photo essays or collections of art should also be packaged into a single PDF document for review.

How often does Queer Quarterly publish?

We have four scheduled releases for each year. In 2021 the body issue (1) releases March 22, the mind issue (2) June 21, the spirit issue (3) September 20, and the looking issue (4) December 20.

WHERE DOES QUEER QUARTERLY PUBLISH?

The magazine will publish in a print-friendly, downloadable PDF file on our website. We encourage reading our magazine on e-readers and other screen devices. Articles will syndicate between issues on the Queer Quarterly, Pattern & Matrix, and K Ryan Henisey blogs.

How can I be a part of the Queer Quarterly project?

Pitch submission for each issue are open to the public with no fees associated for review. Submission for the body issue (1) are now open. Please contact us through email to learn more about being part of our grassroots editorial and design team.

What is the magazines policy on nudity and sex in art?

Queer Quarterly does not have limits on content. Our editorial team is focused on creating a scholarly and inclusive magazine. We recognize that Queer Art and Theory often examine nudity and sexuality as important aspects of the human experience and our teams will consider all materials submitted. But in order to make our pages friendly to the widest segment of LGBTQIA readers, it is unlikely that we will carry artwork, writings, photographs or other media of an overtly sexualized nature (meaning artwork that depicts sexual arousal, penetration, or overt sexualization of the human body) that does not have a clear and intentional purpose beyond the prurient.

Are there fees to ApplY? Or to Subscribe?

We believe in the power of the global queer community. Our magazine does not charge a fee for content consideration and we publish our issues free online.

Does the Magazine pay Artists, Writers, Designers, and Editors?

Queer Quarterly is created entirely through volunteerism, made free for the public. Any profit, after expenses, will be shared on a scaled basis with all collaborators for the issue. Profits are considered from direct tipping (consumer generated gifts) and advertisement sales (direct sponsorships) for the quarterly period between each issue. Share considerations end and restart with each new published collaboration.

What does the magazine mean by "Tipping?"

We encourage our readers to tip our artists. Queer Quarterly is presented as a free e-magazine for the public. For those who are moved to give, we encourage sharing what you feel is appropriate. All gifts are distributed amongst the entire collaborative team for each issue.

Links to encourage tipping (direct gifts) will be included with each publication (including syndication). The tipping pool will be collected for the quarterly period between issues, ending with the next publication.

How are profits distributed amongst collaborators?

Tips and advertisement sales are distributed on a sliding scale amongst our Editorial/Design and Content Collaborator teams. Details and instructions on participating in the tipping and advertisement pool for each issue will be shared directly with accepted collaborators.

Does Queer Quarterly sell advertising space?

Yes. Queer Quarterly is happy to accept direct sponsorship. Please email us directly to learn more about our site and magazine options.
